skreidle: BAD RAP Responds to TIME's 'Problem'

TIME's 'Problem' piece: What a media giant's fumble can teach us about dog bites and an industry in decline | BAD RAP Blog
The number of dog bite injuries spikes in summer months, so to help curb the tide, news sites, trainers, advocacy groups and humane orgs roll out a perennial offering of bite prevention info as early as May. The efforts to educate seem to be helping: Reports from public health agencies around the US tell us that the number of bite injuries reported has declined significantly, even as the dog population has risen by millions during the time period bites have been studied.

What happens though when you take the same worthy topic of dog bite prevention, hand it to a life style writer on a very tight deadline, give the mike to two former bite victims with a whopping vendetta against pit bulls, omit science-based data and add the odor of a messy hoax -- one that falsified claims and exploited a child victim’s very real injuries for quick cash. What do you have?

A messy, tabloid-esque piece for Internet rubber neckers? Yes. Except in the case I’ve just outlined, the bomb that dropped came with TIME Magazine’s name on it. ... It’s so painfully bad, it seems to mock the nine 'Principles of Journalism.'

(FYI: Anyone who refers to dogsbite.org as a valid resource has invalidated their entire position.) Fortunately, Arin Greenwood of the Huffington Post produced this masterful work of actual facts and science in response, and it’s a delight worthy of bookmarking for future reference.

Our beautiful Roxy (our entire family, really) is being lied about to our new neighborhood in Ohio via messages on Nextdoor.com. Roxy is being called an "aggressive pitbull" that we "keep locked up inside" nearly 24/7 by a couple retaliating after we filed a bite report when their dog bit our daughter... for the second time! They are publicly denying that bites took place (unbelievable), and posting accusations that are so false, they're libelous! And so I've responded by creating a public Facebook group/page showing vids and pics of Roxy outside, on walks, enjoying car rides, being trained, performing tricks, and behaving gently with children, friends, our cat, and even a pet rat. Page also features testimonials from people who actually know our dog. (Mods, feel free to delete if not allowed.)

Hello!  It's time again that I offer up pet portrait commissions.  These are ACEO/ATC sized (trading card sized, basically) and done in watercolor (though if watercolor isn't your thing or you wish for something larger, I can work in other mediums and sizes as well, just ask).  They're $20 each, mailed.  I will need photos taken by you for reference that I can choose from to work with, and please note that head shots are best to work with for this size.

While my examples currently are only dogs, I'm looking to expand into other species, so don't be shy if you have cats, bird, rats, rabbits, etc!

I am open for 5 slots (may change depending on various factors), and will do a waiting list if needed.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

neive: Potentially Tagged By Dog Fighters?

Hi guys,

My close friend got back to her house today to find a long black ribbon tied onto her fence and trailing onto her next door neighbor and cross-street neighbors yards. All 3 of them have dogs (2 confirmed pits/staffies). It was supremely long and looks like whoever did it probably had to run off before they could cut it. She unfortunately lives in a really sketchy part of the town and has been seeing a new graffiti around the neighborhood of "vamos", and in the past few weeks noticed one of her fences had been messed with and attempted to be broken into. The next door neighbors dog (who's also unfortunately outside almost all the time) has been antsy and acting like someone is outside nearby at night. The fence could've been from something months ago, but after this happening now we're not sure if it is an old event or not. She had objects by it that blocked whoever was trying to get in at the time.

Long story short, has anyone else heard/seen of anything like this, and is it likely related to other activities or a mark on them all being dog houses? I tried doing some searching and most cases I read of people were using blue ribbons, and it being rumored to be a tag for potential dog-thefts or break-ins. Dog theft was a recurring theme though. Any confirmation to this or what else it could be?

She's going to take precautions in the meantime and contact the police tomorrow to let them know, but just trying to get some more information on this since we're not familiar with it. :c Even though they aren't my dogs the idea of them being a target for dog fighting rings is extremely unsettling.

crysania4: Lea

Some of you might have heard the story of the guy who was convicted of stabbing his two pit bulls with a 10-inch knife (story of his conviction is here). It's interesting to note that the stories on this left two things out: the dog they attacked was also a pit bull. And that dog was not injured at all.

So Lea, the dog who survived is now up for adoption and I was asked to take photos of her for her Facebook page. I thought the folks here would enjoy seeing how this pretty girl is faring. She is a GREAT dog. If you know anyone in the central NY area looking for a really nice adult pit bull, check her out! She LOVES people, is really athletic and active but not overly so, and is awesomely goofy. She's a little insecure with dogs, but is fine with some of them who back off when she issues a warning growl and give her a bit of space to get used to them. She's being trained by great trainer and behaviorist and so is learning how to behave appropriately. Right now her worst behavior is jumping on people. She is honestly an AMAZING dog.

Craigslist Shocker: “3 Years Ago You Were Evicted and I Have Your Dog”
    by Laura Simpson
    February 20, 2014
    5:30 pm

A New York adopter recently marked the three year anniversary of the rescue of her elderly, red pit bull who still wears the physical scars of a once-torn life. In a poignant letter to the person who abandoned the dog, the writer opens the window on a very personal journey of love and recovery. Here is that post which appeared in the Craigslist online classified ads:

“On Feb 9th 2011, you were evicted from an apartment at 20 Catherine St and your old red pit bull was seized by animal control and taken to the kill shelter. She was really skinny and had bad skin infections, and had been bred A LOT. She’d even had a Caesarian, judging by the scar. They said at the kill shelter she was 12 years old. She also had a lopsided face and it looked like there were a few cigarette burns on her head/ears.

I figure you were having a pretty bad time of it, since you were being evicted. I hope things have gotten better for you in the intervening years. Although it’s unlikely you’ll ever see this note, I just wanted you to know that I have your dog and she is doing great.

The AC named her Cathy, for Catherine Street. She was held for cruelty investigation (she was REALLY skinny) then immediately put on the kill list, which is the sort of irony that happens at Animal Care & Control every day. I like old dogs and I loved Cathy’s little lopsided face. A rescue pulled her for me and sent her north.

She gained weight and recovered from her skin issues. Her coat shines now and you can’t see the little round cigarette burn marks any more. We spayed her (her hormones were really out of whack from all the litters she had). She has been wonderful with my young daughter, and our other two dogs. And it turns out she loves to swim! She loves fetch too. If she really was 12 back in 2011, that would make her 15 now but I doubt that as she still will go on long hikes with me, and swim and retrieve balls from the bay until she can barely stand… even though, yes, her face is turning white. She is truly an ambassador for her breed, even people who don’t like pits will stop and pat her as she happily wags her tail. She loves to sleep in sunbeams, and is so happy to go on walks or swims she just wags her tail with every step.

She is sleeping next to me as I type this, grunting with joy. In fact, she sleeps on my bed every night. Your dog is an awesome dog. We love her so much. The past three years we’ve had with her have brought us (and her) so much happiness.

If you do see this, we’d love to know how old she is, and what your name for her was. Also please say a prayer for her, as soon she is going to have mammary surgery to remove some small lumps… unfortunately not spaying a dog and breeding her a lot means she is very likely to get mammary cancer, and Cathy has it. Luckily my vet caught it early, so I am hoping Cathy can spend many more happy years with us. She really is the best dog.

P.S. you can’t have her back.”

Don't let those pretty brown eyes fool you - this little beast has been a demon lately and I'm not sure what to do about it.

Over the last three days he has destroyed the ugly orange chair (which he had no issue with up until now), torn up at least one paper towel roll, chewed the nose of my Katy Perry perfume bottle, ate all of my cranberry supplements, ate all of my vitamins, pooped on the carpet next to the bed (twice), destroyed the XBox controller and keyboard extension, chewed the handle off my window scraper,  ate poop and threw it up in the living room, refused to listen to the "Leave it" command, and "Down" command when on the couch/bed/my lap. He sits on his sister, gnaws on her face, terrorizes her. Although he's getting better about jumping on people when he's excited, he will still do it occasionally and nip (playfully).

He is a little over a year old, and recently was neutered.

It's been too cold to take him for a walk consistently and I know that's probably a large part of it, but I am running out of ideas to keep him from destroying things and eating things he shouldn't.

  • New Study Confirms Preventable Factors in Dog Bites, Breed Not Relevant | Stubbydog
As advocates, we are all too familiar with the dog bite fatality report that was published in 2000 titled “Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998.” This data set has been used incessantly to support breed discriminatory laws, even though the authors of this report themselves have made several statements explaining why the report does NOT support these ineffective and costly laws. ...

This was the only study of its kind, until earlier this month when the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) published the “Co-occurrence of potentially preventable factors in 256 dog bite–related fatalities in the United States (2000–2009).” The objective of the study was to “examine potentially preventable factors in human dog bite-related fatalities (DBRFs) on the basis of data from sources that were more complete, verifiable, and accurate than media reports used in previous studies.” ...

Most dog bite related fatalities had the above preventable factors in common, but nowhere was breed found to be a factor.
